BACKGROUND: In Thailand, the scaly grain mite, Suidasia pontifica Oudemans, impacts the feed industry by emitting a lemongrass-like odor in contaminated feed, reducing its palatability. This study focused on identifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with this odor in contaminated chicken feeds and ground maize, as well as individual mites using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We explored the relationship between VOC concentration and mite population size in chicken feed cultures, aiming to detect minimal mite presence through regression models. Additionally, we tested the sensitivity of nine electronic odor sensors in detecting these VOCs. RESULTS: Our results showed Z-citral and E-citral present in mite-contaminated ground maize, chicken feeds, but absent in uncontaminated samples. Mite populations in chicken feed followed a normal distribution, increasing rapidly, peaking, and then declining, a pattern mirrored in the concentrations of Z-citral and E-citral. Simple linear regression models confirmed a positive correlation between mite density and citral concentrations. Polynomial regression models indicated Z-citral is detectable at mite densities over 67 individuals per gram and E-citral over 3.89 individuals per gram. Odor sensors showed varying readings across different citral concentrations, uncontaminated, and mite-infested chicken feeds. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms that S. pontifica are responsible for the lemongrass-like odor in infested samples, due to Z-citral and E-citral. The citral concentrations increase with mite population growth and are detectable at low mite densities, suggesting their effectiveness as biomarkers for early mite infestation detection. Additionally, MQ series odor sensors detected these VOCs, indicating their potential for monitoring mite infestations in storage environments. This article is protected by copyright. This research investigated volatiles and odor active compounds in Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus. Heterocyclics were mainly extracted from hexane and dichloromethane extracts. Ketones were mainly detected from butanol fraction, and alcohols were mainly extracted from the ethanol fraction. GC-O analysis investigated the contents and intensities of three major odor active compounds increasing by ramping up polarity Multivariate analysis, which includes principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), by E-nose data showed 45.83% (PC1) and 29.27 (PC2) variances, respectively, and segregated two clusters. Multivariate analysis by GC-O data showed 65.64% (PC1) and 24.17% (PC2) variances, respectively, and segregated the three clusters, cluster I by ethanol extract, cluster II by dichloromethane extract, and cluster III by hexane and butanol extracts. This study demonstrates that different polarity solvents can collect various volatiles and odor active compound groups. Our findings can support basic research data as a natural and functional food additive.

INTRODUCTION: A supernumerary nostril is one of the rarest congenital nasal abnormalities. Recently we encountered a 16-months-old patient with 3 supernumerary nostrils that was located at left side of the nose and performed an operation on this case. We reported a rare case of three supernumerary nostril located at left side of the nose. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-month-old male baby was referred to our clinic for assessment of a nose deformity. Physical examination revealed an asymmetrical ala of nose with 3 supernumerary nostrils at left side and a normal right nostril. She was diagnosed with supernumerary rostril and underwent fistulectomy of the accessory nasal tract, followed by nostril reconstruction with primary closure of margin defect at 16-month-old. There was no complication and she was discharged the next day. One month after surgery triamcinolone was injected at scar. Nasal cavity retainer is still maintained in place as aftercare for at least 3-months-post-surgery. We obtained an event-free postoperative result with good function and aesthetic results. DISCUSSION: Supernumerary nostril is an extremely rare case. It should not be confused with a double nose. Surgery should be performed at an early age. Nevertheless, we performed surgery at 16-month-old baby and still obtained satisfying result. CONCLUSION: Surgical technique performed at this rare supernumerary nostril case was fistulectomy of the accessory nasal tract, followed by nostril reconstruction good functions, aesthetic results post operatively.

Purpose/Background: Nasal obstruction is a significant issue influencing the patient's quality of life. Chronic nasal obstruction is frequently associated with other symptoms such as headache, sleep disturbance, and daytime sleepiness. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of nasal obstruction in Saudi Arabia and examine its effect on patients' quality of life. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a self-administered combination of two previously validated questionnaires (the NOSE scale and the WHOQOL-BREF) translated into Arabic. The Mann-Whitney test was used to investigate the association between nasal obstruction prevalence and the participants' QOL. Results: The study included 1039 participants from different regions of Saudi Arabia. The prevalence of nasal obstruction was 60.3% among the participants. Several factors significantly affected the prevalence of nasal obstruction, including sex, suffering from a chronic disease, having a family member with nasal obstruction, and using medications (P < 0.001 for all factors). A better score was shown in the four domains of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire by the participants who had no nasal obstruction: the physical health domain, psychological health, social relationships, and environment (P < 0.001 for all factors). Conclusions: Quality of life is affected by nasal obstruction. The subjective assessment is essential in evaluating the severity of nasal obstruction disease. It is recommended that healthcare providers use subjective tools combined with objective tools to assess the degree of nasal obstruction severity.

The brain- and body-first models of Lewy body disorders predict that aggregated alpha-synuclein pathology usually begins in either the olfactory system or the enteric nervous system. In both scenarios the pathology seems to arise in structures that are closely connected to the outside world. Environmental toxicants, including certain pesticides, industrial chemicals, and air pollution are therefore plausible trigger mechanisms for Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Here, we propose that toxicants inhaled through the nose can lead to pathological changes in alpha-synuclein in the olfactory system that subsequently spread and give rise to a brain-first subtype of Lewy body disease. Similarly, ingested toxicants can pass through the gut and cause alpha-synuclein pathology that then extends via parasympathetic and sympathetic pathways to ultimately produce a body-first subtype. The resulting spread can be tracked by the development of symptoms, clinical assessments, in vivo imaging, and ultimately pathological examination. The integration of environmental exposures into the brain-first and body-first models generates testable hypotheses, including on the prevalence of the clinical conditions, their future incidence, imaging patterns, and pathological signatures. The proposed link, though, has limitations and leaves many questions unanswered, such as the role of the skin, the influence of the microbiome, and the effects of ongoing exposures. Despite these limitations, the interaction of exogenous factors with the nose and the gut may explain many of the mysteries of Parkinson's disease and open the door toward the ultimate goal -prevention.

Various bioelectronic noses have been recently developed for mimicking human olfactory systems. However, achieving direct monitoring of gas-phase molecules remains a challenge for the development of bioelectronic noses due to the instability of receptor and the limitations of its surrounding microenvironment. Here, we report a MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose for the sensitive detection of liquid and gaseous hexanal, a signature odorant from spoiled food. In this study, a conducting MXene/hydrogel structure was formed on a sensor via physical adsorption. Then, canine olfactory receptor 5269-embedded nanodiscs (cfOR5269NDs) which could selectively recognize hexanal molecules were embedded in the three-dimensional (3D) MXene/hydrogel structures using glutaraldehyde as a linker. Our MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose exhibited a high selectivity and sensitivity for monitoring hexanal in both liquid and gas phases. The bioelectronic noses could sensitively detect liquid and gaseous hexanal down to 10-18 M and 6.9 ppm, and they had wide detection ranges of 10-18 - 10-6 M and 6.9-32.9 ppm, respectively. Moreover, our bioelectronic nose allowed us to monitor hexanal levels in fish and milk. In this respect, our MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose could be a practical strategy for versatile applications such as food spoilage assessments in both liquid and gaseous systems.

The fungal infection causing white-nose disease in hibernating bats in North America has resulted in dramatic population declines of affected species, since the introduction of the causative agent Pseudogymnoascus destructans. The fungus is native to the Palearctic, where it also infects several bat species, yet rarely causes severe pathology or the death of the host. Pseudogymnoascus destructans infects bats during hibernation by invading and digesting the skin tissue, resulting in the disruption of torpor patterns and consequent emaciation. Relations among pathogen, host, and environment are complex, and individuals, populations, and species respond to the fungal pathogen in different ways. For example, the Nearctic Myotis lucifugus responds to infection by mounting a robust immune response, leading to immunopathology often contributing to mortality. In contrast, the Palearctic M. myotis shows no significant immunological response to infection. This lack of a strong response, resulting from the long coevolution between the hosts and the pathogen in the pathogen's native range, likely contributes to survival in tolerant species. After more than 15 years since the initial introduction of the fungus to North America, some of the affected populations are showing signs of recovery, suggesting that the fungus, hosts, or both are undergoing processes that may eventually lead to coexistence. The suggested or implemented management methods of the disease in North America have encompassed, for example, the use of probiotics and fungicides, vaccinations, and modifying the environmental conditions of the hibernation sites to limit the growth of the pathogen, intensity of infection, or the hosts' responses to it. Based on current knowledge from Eurasia, policy makers and conservation managers should refrain from disrupting the ongoing evolutionary processes and adopt a holistic approach to managing the epizootic.


Vista paleártica de una enfermedad fúngica de murciélagos Resumen La enfermedad fúngica que produce el síndrome de nariz blanca en murciélagos en hibernación en Norte América ha resultado en declinaciones poblacionales dramáticas en las especies afectadas desde la introducción del agente causante, Pseudogymnoascus destructans. El hongo es nativo del Paleártico, donde también infecta a varias especies de murciélagos; sin embargo, raramente causa patología severa o la muerte del hospedero. Pseudogymnoascus destructans infecta a los murciélagos durante la hibernación invadiendo y digiriendo el tejido de la piel, lo que resulta en la disrupción de los patrones de torpor y la consecuente emaciación. Las relaciones entre el patógeno, el huésped y el ambiente son complejas, y los individuos, las especies y poblaciones responden al patógeno fúngico de distintas maneras. Por ejemplo, Myotis lucifugus, especie del Neártico, responde a la infección montando una respuesta inmune robusta, produciendo una inmunopatología que a menudo contribuye a la mortalidad. High-temperature Daqu (HTD) is the starter for producing sauce-flavor Baijiu, with different-colored Daqu (white, yellow, and black) reflecting variations in fermentation chamber conditions, chemical reactions, and associated microbiota. Understanding the relationship between Daqu characteristics and flavor/taste is challenging yet vital for improving Baijiu fermentation. This study utilized metagenomic sequencing, physicochemical analysis, and electronic sensory evaluation to compare three different-colored HTD and their roles in fermentation. Fungi and bacteria dominated the HTD-associated microbiota, with fungi increasing as the fermentation temperature rose. The major fungal genera were Aspergillus (40.17%) and Kroppenstedtia (21.16%), with Aspergillus chevalieri (25.65%) and Kroppenstedtia eburnean (21.07%) as prevalent species. Microbial communities, functionality, and physicochemical properties, particularly taste and flavor, were color-specific in HTD. Interestingly, the microbial communities in different-colored HTDs demonstrated robust functional complementarity. White Daqu exhibited non-significantly higher α-diversity compared to the other two Daqu. It played a crucial role in breaking down substrates such as starch, proteins, hyaluronic acid, and glucan, contributing to flavor precursor synthesis. Yellow Daqu, which experienced intermediate temperature and humidity, demonstrated good esterification capacity and a milder taste profile. Black Daqu efficiently broke down raw materials, especially complex polysaccharides, but had inferior flavor and taste. Notably, large within-group variations in physicochemical quality and microbial composition were observed, highlighting limitations in color-based HTD quality assessment. Water content in HTD was associated with Daqu flavor, implicating its crucial role. This study revealed the complementary roles of the three HTD types in sauce-flavor Baijiu fermentation, providing valuable insights for product enhancement.

Multiphoton electron extraction spectroscopy (MEES) is an advanced analytical technique that has demonstrated exceptional sensitivity and specificity for detecting molecular traces on solid and liquid surfaces. Building upon the solid-state MEES foundations, this study introduces the first application of MEES in the gas phase (gas-phase MEES), specifically designed for quantitative detection of gas traces at sub-part per billion (sub-PPB) concentrations under ambient atmospheric conditions. Our experimental setup utilizes resonant multiphoton ionization processes using ns laser pulses under a high electrical field. The generated photoelectron charges are recorded as a function of the laser's wavelength. This research showcases the high sensitivity of gas-phase MEES, achieving high spectral resolution with resonant peak widths less than 0.02 nm FWHM. We present results from quantitative analysis of benzene and aniline, two industrially and environmentally significant compounds, demonstrating linear responses in the sub-PPM and sub-PPB ranges. The enhanced sensitivity and resolution of gas-phase MEES offer a powerful approach to trace gas analysis, with potential applications in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, security screening, and medical diagnostics. This study confirms the advantages of gas-phase MEES over many traditional optical spectroscopic methods and demonstrates its potential in direct gas-trace sensing in ambient atmosphere.

This study was focused on the analysis of the emission of volatile compounds as an indicator of changes in the quality degradation of corn groats with 14% and 17% moisture content (wet basis) using an electronic nose (Agrinose) at changing vertical pressure values. The corn groats were used in this study in an unconsolidated state of 0 kPa (the upper free layer of bulk material in the silo) and under a consolidation pressure of 40 kPa (approximately 3 m from the upper layer towards the bottom of the silo) and 80 kPa (approximately 6 m from the upper layer towards the bottom of the silo). The consolidation pressures corresponded to the vertical pressures acting on the layers of the bulk material bed in medium-slender and low silos. Chromatographic determinations of volatile organic compounds were performed as reference tests. The investigations confirmed the correlation of the electronic nose response with the quality degradation of the groats as a function of storage time. An important conclusion supported by the research results is that, based on the determined levels of intensity of volatile compound emission, the electronic nose is able to distinguish the individual layers of the bulk material bed undergoing different degrees of quality degradation.

Electronic nose devices stand out as pioneering innovations in contemporary technological research, addressing the arduous challenge of replicating the complex sense of smell found in humans. Currently, sensor instruments find application in a variety of fields, including environmental, (bio)medical, food, pharmaceutical, and materials production. Particularly the latter, has seen a significant increase in the adoption of technological tools to assess food quality, gradually supplanting human panelists and thus reshaping the entire quality control paradigm in the sector. This process is happening even more rapidly in the world of wine, where olfactory sensory analysis has always played a central role in attributing certain qualities to a wine. In this review, conducted using sources such as PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science, we examined papers published between January 2015 and January 2024. The aim was to explore prevailing trends in the use of human panels and sensory tools (such as the E-nose) in the wine industry. The focus was on the evaluation of wine quality attributes by paying specific attention to geographical origin, sensory defects, and monitoring of production trends. Analyzed results show that the application of E-nose-type sensors performs satisfactorily in that trajectory. Nevertheless, the integration of this type of analysis with more classical methods, such as the trained sensory panel test and with the application of destructive instrument volatile compound (VOC) detection (e.g., gas chromatography), still seems necessary to better explore and investigate the aromatic characteristics of wines.

Bee pollen, derived from various plant sources, is renowned for its nutritional and bioactive properties, aroma, and taste. This study examined the bee pollen with the highest yield in China obtained from four plant species, namely Brassica campestris (Bc), Nelumbo nucifera (Nn), Camellia japonica (Cj), and Fagopyrum esculentum (Fe), using fast e-nose and e-tongue technology to analyze their flavor chemistry. Results showed substantial differences in scent profiles among the varieties, with distinct odor compounds identified for each, including n-butanol, decanal, and ethanol, in Bc, Nn, and Cj, respectively. The primary odorants in Fe consist of E-2-hexen-1-ol and (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. Additionally, e-tongue analysis revealed seven distinct tastes in bee pollen samples: AHS, PKS, CTS, NMS, CPS, ANS, and SCS, with variations in intensity across each taste. The study also found correlations between taste components and specific odor compounds, providing insights for enhancing product quality control in bee pollen processing.

Odor is one of the important indicators evaluating the quality of traditional Chinese medicines. Research data has shown that there are increasing methods available for evaluating the odors of traditional Chinese medicines. Compared with conventional odor sensing techniques, electronic noses stand out for their convenience, high speed, and objectivity. The progress in the pharmaceutical technology of traditional Chinese medicines has provided new formulas and dosage forms for the innovative development in this field. The electronic nose with versatility can be customized to be equipped with a variety of cross-sensors, which can well satisfy the needs of the traditional Chinese medicine preparation technology. This study summarizes the characteristics, application status, and representative products of the current electronic nose, and analyzes the application and feasibility of electronic nose in the production of traditional Chinese medicine preparations based on the current status of odor evaluation. This review is expected to provide new methods, techno-logies, and ideas for electronic nose to play its unique role in the whole-process quality control and pharmaceutical process of traditional Chinese medicine preparations.

Using the "Don't look" (DL) paradigm, wherein participants are asked not to look at a specific feature (i.e., eye, nose, and mouth), we previously documented that Easterners struggled to completely avoid fixating on the eyes and nose. Their underlying mechanisms for attractiveness may differ because the fixations on the eyes were triggered only reflexively, whereas fixations on the nose were consistently elicited. In this study, we predominantly focused on the nose, where the center-of-gravity (CoG) effect, which refers to a person's tendency to look near an object's CoG, could be confounded. Full-frontal and mid-profile faces were used because the latter's CoG did not correspond to the nose location. Although we hypothesized that these two effects are independent, the results indicated that, in addition to the successful tracing of previous studies, the CoG effect explains the nose-attracting effect. This study not only reveals this explanation but also raises a question regarding the CoG effect on Eastern participants.

RESUMO

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a slow-growing but aggressive malignant skin tumour derived from sebaceous glands. SC most commonly occurs in the periocular region, whereas extraocular sites are rare. SC of the nasal dorsum is a rare pathology, and only a few cases are reported worldwide. Here, we report a case of an 80-year-old man who presented with a mass over the nasal dorsum, diagnosed morphologically and immunohistochemically as sebaceous carcinoma.

This study proposes an efficient method for monitoring the submerged fermentation process of Tremella fuciformis (T. fuciformis) by integrating electronic nose (e-nose), electronic tongue (e-tongue), and colorimeter sensors using a data fusion strategy. Chemometrics was employed to establish qualitative identification and quantitative prediction models. The Pearson correlation analysis was applied to extract features from the e-nose and tongue sensor arrays. The optimal sensor arrays for monitoring the submerged fermentation process of T. fuciformis were obtained, and four different data fusion methods were developed by incorporating the colorimeter data features. To achieve qualitative identification, the physicochemical data and principal component analysis (PCA) results were utilized to determine three stages of the fermentation process. The fusion signal based on full features proved to be the optimal data fusion method, exhibiting the highest accuracy across different models. Notably, random forest (RF) was shown to be the most accurate pattern recognition method in this paper. For quantitative prediction, partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector regression (SVR) were employed to predict the sugar content and dry cell weight during fermentation. The best respective predictive R2 values for reducing sugar, tremella polysaccharide and dry cell weight were found to be 0.965, 0.988, and 0.970. Furthermore, due to its ability to capture nonlinear data relationships, SVR had superior performance in prediction modeling than PLSR. The results demonstrated that the combination of electronic sensor fusion signals and chemometrics provided a promising method for effectively monitoring T. fuciformis fermentation.

The blood-brain barrier presents a key limitation to the administration of therapeutic molecules for the treatment of brain disease. While drugs administered orally or intravenously must cross this barrier to reach brain targets, the unique anatomical structure of the olfactory system provides a route to deliver drugs directly to the brain. Entering the brain via receptor, carrier, and adsorption-mediated transcytosis in the nasal olfactory and trigeminal regions has the potential to increase drug delivery. In this review, we introduce the physiological and anatomical structures of the nasal cavity, and summarize the possible modes of transport and the relevant receptors and carriers in the nose-to-brain pathway. Additionally, we provide examples of nanotherapeutics developed for intranasal drug delivery to the brain. Further development of nanoparticles that can be applied to intranasal delivery systems promises to improve drug efficacy and reduce drug resistance and adverse effects by increasing molecular access to the brain. INTRODUCTION: The nose has been receiving increased attention as a route for drug delivery. As the site of deposition constitutes the first point of contact of the body with the drug, characterization of the regional deposition of intranasally delivered droplets or particles is paramount to formulation and device design of new products. AREAS COVERED: This review article summarizes the recent literature on intranasal regional drug deposition evaluated in vivo, in vitro and in silico, with the aim of correlating parameters measured in vitro with formulation and device performance. We also highlight the relevance of regional deposition to two emerging applications: nose-to-brain drug delivery and intranasal vaccines. EXPERT OPINION: As in vivo studies of deposition can be costly and time-consuming, researchers have often turned to predictive in vitro and in silico models. Variability in deposition is high due in part to individual differences in nasal geometry, and a complete predictive model of deposition based on spray characteristics remains elusive. Carefully selected or idealized geometries capturing population average deposition can be useful surrogates to in vivo measurements. Continued development of in vitro and in silico models may pave the way for development of less variable and more effective intranasal drug products.

Foreign body sinusitis is a rare but important condition that should be taken into account when considering differential diagnoses. In this case report, we present a unique case of sinusitis caused by a foreign body originating from a dental procedure. Additionally, the complexity of the case was compounded by the patient's occupation as a flight attendant. A 49-year-old female flight attendant presented with a two-month history of facial pressure exacerbated by flying. A computed tomography (CT) of her paranasal sinuses confirmed the presence of a radiopaque foreign body near the left maxillary infundibulum, with minimal left ethmoid sinus mucosal thickening. Initially, she elected for non-operative management due to schedule conflicts. Upon follow-up over the next year, she complains of recurring severe facial swelling and congestion. A repeat CT scan shows that she has a dental amalgam that migrated from her left maxilla to the ethmoid infundibulum, lodged between her uncinate process and ethmoid bulla. The patient subsequently underwent foreign body removal. The patient recovered well, and a follow-up CT confirmed the complete removal of the foreign body. This case provides excellent insight into the mechanism of foreign body migration and sinusitis complicated by the unique circumstances of barotrauma associated with regular air travel.
